A Grand Night for Kidsmart!
Gala Opera and Broadway Dinner by the
Sea

On Saturday, January 20, 2007 at
6:30 pm the Los Cabos Optimist Club presented a Gala Opera and Broadway Dinner
by the Sea at the Galeon Restaurant in Los Cabos. It was brought by Annette
Farmer of the Los Cabos Opera Guild and her assistant Gloria Bullock.
The eager audience was treated to a magical night of opera and broadway
favorites. The artists who donated their time flew in from California and Oregon
to unite for an exhilarating night of KIDSMART fundraising.
Katherine Brim, lovely soprano from Portland and winner of their local MET
auditions returned for a second year to show her operatic gifts.
Lawyer/baritone, Eric Castro of Los Angeles Lyric Opera made his Cabo debut to
the delight of the crowd in solos and duets through the night. Well known
accompanist, director and emcee Dr. Richard Weiss in his third year in Cabo
created a very graphic storyline for the evening’s music.
In her fourth year of charity work in Los Cabos and a full member of the Los
Cabos Optimist Club, Demetra George, double Grammy List nominee in classical
music sang, danced and acted her way thru the evening running the gamut of
opera, Broadway and movie songs to the pleasure of her following there.
George who is mother of 2 girls and married to Mike Mustafoglu Honorary Consul
General of N. Cyprus is a former Miss Oklahoma to Miss America. She lost a child
and began a women’s charity based in LA with 150 members that raises funds for
blind and underprivileged children in the US and third world countries. Kids are
her love.
As resident soprano of the opera company in Las Vegas, she has sung concerts in
every major hotel there and starred in the Nevada Opera Theatre’s productions of
La Boheme, La Traviata and the Merry Widow which allowed her to stay close to
her family and home in Beverly Hills, CA. She has been the star of “Opera Under
the Stars” for five years on Lake Las Vegas where Bocelli sings on the floating
stage.
The evening began with a sumptuous Italian meal from El Galeon. Opening music
was Verdi’s Brindisi, Drinking Song, from La Traviata. The midsection included
selections from Puccini, Bizet, Gounod, Rossini, Lehar, Romberg, Rodgers and
Hammerstein, Porter and Kern.
An added treat for the concert goers was a last minute surprise aria by baritone
Ariel Caranza of Todos Santos.
All funds from the event including sales from 50 copies of her Grammy CD and her
two new ones, “By George, She’s Got It!” and “Demetra George-A Mediterranean
Journey” went to the Optimist Kidsmart program to meet their goals. Three of
these outstanding students spoke in Spanish and English to the group thanking
all for their efforts in fulfilling their dreams of a good education.
The night ended with a standing ovation for Castro and George’s rich rendition
of the Phantom of the Opera duet by Andrew Lloyd Webber. As the audience cried
for more, the singers offered from the 50’s musical State Fair, “It’s a Grand
Night for Singing” and -----------it truly was!
